What could cause this?
i bought the kit and engine like this used and could never get it tuned

My guess would be one of the engine bearings went bad at one point causing the crankshaft to have enough play for the rod to hit the engine case. Either that, or maybe dirt got in the engine.

bearings are fine 🤷🏽*♂️. This will be the last time I buy an engine used

The bearings may be fine now, but they could have been damaged at one point. Used engines are tricky, and can certainly be hit or miss. Probably best to used engines from people you know.
