Default 22-Oct 2016 Race Report

Last night featured some very good racing, but it also had a slight hex on it from the start. Fortunately it has happened only once before, and that was when we had a 7-panel track—we swapped rolls two and three during setup. It’s one of those things that in hindsight should have been completely obvious, as while setting up the track we struggled to find the pipe markings. But rolls one and four were fine and it just didn’t register. I thought maybe the markings were fading, and I concentrated on the pipe and what I knew the layout to be rather than taking a moment to simply look at the rolls. It wasn’t until Andrew pointed it out during signups that it sunk in. While the stock and Scale Spec classes were fine, the modified classes were a handful with the nap of the rug going all harem scarem. So…we shut down practice and performed an all-hands panel swap that set things to right. All in all, a rather face-palming start to what turned out a biggish night with 63 entries in 13 heats.

Results are attached, so I leave it to you lap time detectives to recreate the rounds, like replaying a ball game by studying box scores. I’ll add that Novice continues to pull, and we have some good drivers in that field who are going to be solid members of the club if they commit to the hobby long-term.

We take a longer break until the next race. Hangar 30 is in holiday mode with constant booking through the month. We’ll be back there on November 22, a Tuesday one-off. The Big Chill is two weeks away, and that is a great destination race. It has taken over for the Timezone Gran Prix as the northwest’s fall classic where a big group shows for a throwdown. I heartily recommend it. It’s in Chilliwack, BC, and it’s hosted by Overgeared Racing, our friends from Richmond who so often join us down here. We’ll be back in the gym on November 19.

Race on!

Sup Trav, my new Serpent 4x arrives on Wednesday, looking forward to building it. Not sure how much I can race it though, maybe you can wheel it for me sometime.

Dawgs are looking strong aren't they!

Default 1/12th MOD 6.5 vs OPEN

Does anyone have any thoughts on moving the rules of 1/12th MOD to 6.5 vs leaving it open?

From looking at a few of the latest big races it seems that the number of 6.5 entries has been on the rise.

It is amazing to see so many in the 17.5 class this last Saturday. (Even without Team Lence)

Would the standardization of 6.5 do the same thing to 1/12th MOD?

I would consider it @ 6.5.

If they're going to make a big change to 1/12 later on next year, I'm going to enjoy open motor and open speedo as long as I can.

another spec motor of the month class isn't what I'm looking for.

Hi John
I dont think the rules has change to 6.5 motor.....I believe the rules for 12th Mod is the same since the season started.....if they did ,than the rules should have been updated by now

My 2 cents: 6.5 is a bandaid spec class. Sure, it will spark interest, and many will think they can "handle" a 6.5 and deep down feel they have a chance to win. Don't kid yourself, 6.5 is still a lot of race car. But on the same token, jump in, it's very doable. Here's the catch, all 6.5's are not equal. And as racers, you will spend $$$ until you feel you've found "the one" until you get crushed and you will find that you are back online Monday morning dropping more cash. Then you feel your battery is not good enough. Then you hear about another tire line that is 0.2/sec quicker. Soldering in a 6.5 will not get the reward that you think is out there.

Open mod for the time being is exhilarating and is only limited by your ability. And when you race under those circumstances, you can except defeat/victory at a far lessor price. If a racer chooses to race 6.5 blinky in the open mod class so that he can be within his limits and enjoy a consistent confident drive.... then a logical choice was made. Mod racing is about making the correct choice for yourself and doing the best of your ability.

Slapmaster very well spoken and a good point. I can see overall how it would drive up the price once you are within 1 lap of the leader. However; if the class grows from 3 or 4 to say 7 or 8 then overall it seems like a win.

So in summery I think that you are saying, come join 1/12 MOD and come run as fast as you can. You want to run 6.5 spec fine, just don't limit my speed just because you can't handle it.
