Yeah a tripod is neccessary for fireworks photography because of the long exposures.

I basically set my shutter speed to "bulb"...activate shutter when I hear the launch...and close shutter when the burst is at maximum...but it does take some timing to get right. my aperature was set at 11

Don't forget about the Rose festival fire works show normally held in early June. It's a good way to practice your timing for the July 4th shows. Also, there are random fireworks shows throughout the year at PGE Park and other places around here. I know it kinda sucks not being able to shoot fireworks on a regular basis like it is with RC
