I have the first generation MTX-3 as well. All you will need to do is change to the 0.8 pitch gears and you will do fine. If you can't find the MTX-3 0.8 pitch clutch bell gears, I have a set that I could sell you cheap. I currently use my MTX-3 as a backup car to my MTX-4 (and it fills in nicely when the MTX-4 doesn't perform well).

J-Lock, what teeth count do they have? The guy I bought the car from threw in an extra set, the ones on the engine now are:

1st gear=16t and 2nd gear=20t

Im not too familiar with the whole pitch thing, can you explain.

As far as I know the clutch bell gears are also referred to as pinion gears (if Im not mistaken) and the lower tooth count on the pinion gears the more bottom end snap you will have.

There are two pitchs that Mugen came out with for the MTX-3, 1.0 and 0.8. The 1.0 pitch is standard with the first production of the car. That is what you currently have. Those gears are fine but you will not be able to gear the car enough for a large track with a 225'+ straightaway. When Mugen came out with the MTX-3 Prospec, that car came with the 0.8 pitch gears. These gears are finer toothed and offer more gearing ratio selections for the different sizes of tracks. The only drawback is that if the mesh is off just a minute fraction, 0.8 pitch gears strip very easily (the spur gears).

Yes you are correct with lower tooth gear but only on the first gear as far as "snap" is concerned. But, you also have to have the clutch set up properly as well because if it hits too slow or too hard, that will negate the "snap" you are seeking.

I believe this is the yellow clutch shoe Corse-R was referring to. This should fit right?

I am currently using the gray clutch shoe on both my MTX-3 and MTX-4. I would hold on using the yellow or red clutch shoe unless you are running the hottest, modified .12 engines. But, you will definitely have to upgrade from the stock black clutchshoe that is probably on the car.

I am looking to get into the nitro touring car scene. I have been looking into the mugen car. I know that the MTX-4 is the newer one, but I will only be driving every couple weeks. This being said my local hoby shop has a MTX-3 that they are trying to unload. What is the Diference in the two. Are the parts for the MTX-4 interchangable with the ones on the 3
Thanks

of course get yourself MTX4.

MTX3 is an old car by now...... and you will find it VERY difficult to find spare parts like bulkheads, suspension arms, upper deck, and many other things. And you will be alone driving an old car in the track.

Secondly, MTX3's handling is no contest to MTX4 ( I have mtx3 and mtx4, and I know the difference )

If you are interested in racing just a few times and want to keep your costs down for a season, don't write the MTX-3 off.

However, unless they give you a hugh deal ($150) for the new kit let it sit. You can pick up a used car with parts for $100 and enjoy. The MTX-3 is not as fast as the MTX-4, but it will take a much harder hit and is let prone to break. There are not a lot of parts that will work between the cars so do not look at it as upgrade.

I've got a MTX-3 and parts to keep it running for a few years. For me racing in the summer outside is time to sit back and enjoy the weather. Now when carpet season is around, 1/12 scale is the class that I really work at.

With that all being said, I beleive Mugen is going to update the MTX-4 and I'll probably purchase it when it comes out, but sometime in 2008/2009.

Just my thoughts
