Default 1/8 onroad driving techniques - let's share

Today was my first time trying my hand at 1/8 onroad and was pleasantly discovering the ways to drive this type of car as my previous experience was with 1/10 touring car (or at least cars with a diff in it).

I was told by some helpful guys at the track that the proper way to handle a 1/8 onroad car is not to let off on the throttle going round corners or else the car will oversteer tremendously. I was advised that with 1/8 onroad, one has to keep on the throttle basically all the time, especially during cornering so as to get that rear drifting effect (kind of like a slot car sliding around the corner while the front is planted).

Is this so?

Anyone care to share their 1/8 driving techniques and secrets?

I'm definitely hooked on 1/8 nitro - so raw and intense and FAST!!!

The car definitely is easier to drive when you're on the throttle.. but the key is to be very smooth on the throttle and to know how your car is going to react to whatever the track conditions are or how you drive the car. If you have a predictable car, then it is much easier to drive. But being smooth on the throttle is one of the most important things to learn. You can get more mileage, not wear the tires as much, and not scrub as much speed (you can see that when someone is not smooth, their car will tend to wobble coming out of a corner because of too much throttle input). It'll definitely make you faster being smooth.

Thanks Brandon.

I already have a background in 1/10 electric touring cars so now my move into 1/8 nitro requires me to merely adjust my driving technique because no diffs are involved. I'm mindful of the usual concepts such as racing lines, smoothness on throttle, as little braking as possible etc.

I'm trying to get used to the quasi-drifting nature of 1/8 onroad

Those massive rear tires and spool make the things pretty much impossible to turn at all unless you're on the gas or the brakes. Trail brake into tight turns to help rotate to the apex and then balance the car off the corner with the throttle.

Pretty neat video if you watch it carefully and listen you can see distinctly different driving styles and even braking styles.

Christiani in the green and Balestri in the pink are the most aggressive.

Collari has much more subtle driving style..car is white with blue and pink.

Peitsch style somewhere in the middle of smooth and aggressive....car is white blue green and pink.

I corner marshalled at a bunch of different spots on purpose a this race and definitely different ways to drive.

Is one way ultimately faster than the other...who knows...but to finish first first you must finish. Sometimes smoother is better option for the average racer.
