Default Drive gear on centre diff

Hi guys
Question is it better to run. Bigger or smaller drive gear for example if the car runs a 46 tooth gear would it be better to run a 48 I know this will give you the in between gearing if needed for a track.
Is it more beneficial to run a bigger or smaller ????
