Just used my MTX4 for the first time and after about 20 mins the second plastic spur gear stripped. Why would this happen? the engine is square with correct mesh.

Check the clutch bell bearings. The inner one is probably gone.

Scott Fisher is correct about the Alfa, But at the last state race at Ft Myers, I had to run the Alfa after trashing my Mazda body. I was suprized to see how it performed of the mtx4, but on the 3, it was unstable.

If your 2speed hub was rubbing the clutch bell, this gear will strip out. Look at your 2nd speed hub to see if there is a small ring rubbed in it from the clutch bell. It has very little clearance.

I think somebody wrote the best way, remove the foam bumber and mount it, then put the foam back on and cut it till till it fits.

who all on this thread is going to the January race for a warm-up for the winternats?

Checked the two speed hub and no marks.

I think i found the problem, clutch bell wasn't shimmed enough and had too much play.

I am going, got my tickets, hotel and rental car. I'm working out what I can get on the plane and what I will check. Should be interesting. My X3 Prospec is so good that I may start out with it. I will bring my X4 and give a good test. It hasn't turned a wheel yet so we will see.

You won't have a lot left of the bumper, but you will still have enough bumper.

We have also found another cause for the spur gear stripping. Check you carburetor and make sure it is not hitting your brake disk. I know it sounds stupid, but check it anyway. Some people have rotated their carbs and it rubs on the brake disk. It has caused a problem for some racers.

Another thing that can cause 2nd gear to strip out regularly is if you are catching air. When you catch air, you have two things that strip gears.

1st: The launch and landing cause chassis flex which can strip gears.
2nd: When you land, if you don't get off the gas you have all the instant loading on the geartrain.

Scott, you haven't been to Crystal Park again have you? I did strip 1 2nd gear there, in the first round of qualifying.

I wonder if the small engine mount screws have anything to do with striped gears?

What do you mean by small? the mounts and screws look to be the same as they were on the -3?
