How much throttle is required to keep the engine running?

just lightly reving it will keep it running. i would say 5-10% throttle and it wont die, its just idling on its own or full throttle to stopping it will die

At 5% throttle how open is the carburetor? single needles are hard to tune he may have to get a two needle carburetor.

If you checked everything the only thing I would recommend is setting the idle as high as you can without the car moving. Now you will have to clear the engine out so it doesn't load up on fuel as it idle and die.

He was talking about doing the hpi upgrade program to the 3.0. would that be a better idea then messing with the carb or buying a better carb?

You need to make sure that the Crank Shaft is compatible with fly wheel and clutch bell if they don't fit he will have to buy new parts. I would make sure that the crank shaft is the same, "thread length and the length of the shaft".

A new engine is always a plus.

The RS4 3 RTR was my first nitro car and it was always a pain in the arse to tune correctly. After sealing the engine, countless glow plugs and even a new 2-needle slide carb, I gave up and got an HPI 12r ss motor. Put the 2-needle slide carb on there and that thing ran flawlessly.
