I use a small slotted driver placed on the two ends of the `E`and,by applying a little presure, lift enough to remove with my trusty finger nail.
Sometimes I like to spend my quality time hunting for e-clips on my lounge carpet - sharpens the vision no-end !!!
Small e-clips sometimes loosen after being removed more than once.Gently close them with pliers and they are fine.

Or you can use an E-clip remover tool. Do it the right way without damaging anything.

redsand, those tools are great but are way too big for our little e-clips.
greddy, that works great and is the way I have done it for years. The only ones that doesn't work on is the 2mm e-clips you see on shock shafts which can be a royal PITA. For that, Tamiya makes a sweet 2mm and 4mm tool for e-clips. You can see a pic and the part numbers here http://www.rccaraction.com/RC/articl...ool_guide3.asp
