There is an over-long story about the GLC now posted on SGrid Online, (www.sgrid.com) along with spy photos of the prototype Serpent Cobra GT car! Race information on the GLC and photos will be posted daily both on Starting Grid Backtalk Forums, and on the RC Tech Forums.

Flying into Detroit takes you to a very modern airport terminal!

What a beautiful track to race on!!

The 2010 GLC came to life Tuesday night August 24, as people started showing up. By Wednesday, many of the racers will either be at the track, or be arriving that evening. Wednesday and Thursday are practice days. There are two rounds of qualifying on Friday, and three more on Saturday. The Mains are held on Sunday, along with a huge raffle. By late Sunday itís all over, but for Mondayís clean-up.

Race statistics. This is the 12th running of the GLC. The current track size is 110í by 230í, with a driving line 956 feet long. Lap times for 1/8 scale cars are typically in the 18-19 second range. The lap times for 1/10 cars are typically 20-21 seconds. Classes include 1/10 200mm 4-wheel-drive Sedan, 1/8 4WD Masters Class, 1/8 4WD Open Class, and GT Class (1/8 Off-road buggies on steroids). As of Wednesday, the club is expecting around 110 racers to show up.

My plan is to take a few early photos to show what this yearís track is like. Then Iíll concentrate on photos of many of the racers. As we get near the qualifying, Iíll try to get chassis photos of some of the cars that are performing best. As we get into the qualifiers and finals, Iíll try once again to get some racing shots. My plan is to post all the photos as galleries, but to post the actual images, rather than a "flash gallery". T his will allow anyone to download those photos they might want copies of.

Reports and photos will show up on SGrid Online (www.sgrid.com), the Starting Grid Backtalk Forums (also www.sgrid.com), and RC Tech (www.rctech.net). I donít plan on doing "video coverage", but I did bring along a small ex-RayWood video camera so I can upload enough video to show people what the track is like. These will be posted on www.youtube.com/startinggridmagazine. Iíll be sending Eoghain an email, asking if he wants to publish any of this material at www.redrc.net.

Practice started on Wednesday.

I'm not sure which class this vehicle is being entered in - buggy class?

Today was the first "official" day at the Great Lakes Challenge. My plan for the day was to try to get a photo of everyone competing at the event. I probably missed a few people, but it's not from lack of trying.

I was going to post the photos here, but there are 113 of them, and I don't know how to how to automate the posting - and I'm not sure if everyone wants well over 100 images to go through in this discussion. What I'll do is post a link to where you can find the whole series of images. Even though they are reduced size images, there still are 113 of them, so be prepared to wait for them to load.

If you do NOT have an account in the Starting Grid Backtalk forums, click here:
http://www.sgrid.com/cgi-bin/backtalk/peeknroad,23

If you do have an account there, simply go to the Starting Grid Onroad forum and read item #23. (Signups for SGrid accounts are free at least through the end of next month if you're a racer.)

What I usually do for posting many images is to post a photo gallery, but then people ask for larger size images to print out. Doing it this new way, all the images are larger, so they can be printed or used for a screen saver.

Here's one of the images, Mike Swauger.

It's now 2:30pm Friday. The first round of qualifying is half over. The race report, photos and qualifying standings will be posted early this afternoon, probably after the first round of qualifying is completed.

There will also be an update on Mugen's latest 1/8 onroad car, and Dan Louis' new four-wheel-braking system.

Qualifying

The beautiful weather weíve been experiencing continued, and got even
better if thatís possible. You couldnít ask for better racing weather.
The nearest reported rain cloud was rumored to be somewhere in
Transylvania.

The plan for today is to run practice all morning, have a driverís
meeting at noon, and then run the first two rounds of qualifying. The
race schedule got a bit longer than expected, when 140 racers signed up,
with others still on the way. Even with running 14 cars in the 1/10
scale Mains, and 12 cars in the 1/8 Mains, itís going to be difficult if
not impossible to stay within the goal of only 16 Mains - and this is
with running all eleven (more coming??) 1/8 GT cars together.

Everything is running smooth as silk. Everyone is just doing the right
thing without needing to be told. Part of this is because everyone
already seems to know what to do, and part because of the *fun*
atmosphere at the event. Josh Cyrulís wife has set up a food stand
alongside the track, so even that need is now taken care of. The PA
system is loud and clear, so no matter where you are, youíre informed of
what is going on - and in case you want to work indoors, you can tune
your FM radio to 89.7 and listen in your camper or trailer.

NEW IN THE PITS:
Dan Louis showed up with a new design for four-wheel-drive-braking for
1/8 on-road cars. These systems used to be illegal for this class, but
apparently the rule was removed from the ROAR rulebook. Iíve been told
the rule still remains in the IFMAR rules. Don came up with an
ingenious way to fit it to his 1/8 Shepherd car - it all fits together
as if it had been designed by the factory! Dan has been inventing new
parts for r/c race cars for 35 years now! This is just the latest in a
long line of things he has thought up and turned into reality.

Dan is running a Shepherd CEFX Version. He machined and fabricated all
the pieces. There are stainless steel rotors designed to "float" on
the front outdrives. Shepherd brake pads are used. There is a cable
from the throttle/brake servo, running to the self-adjusting brake
controls for the front brakes. The amount of front braking can be
varied, but there is a limit because of the front one-way bearings. Dan
says the front brakes are even more effective because of the weight
transfer during breaking - he can drive further into the corners before
having to apply the brakes.

RACING:
The driverís meeting was held at noon, and everyone brought up their
cars for a group photo. Qualifying got underway soon afterwards.
Thanks to the "flagless start" developed by the Toledo club, even that
part of the event fit seamlessly into the general flow of the event.
There is a countdown starting at 30 seconds before the start of each
qualifier. Cars can come in for refueling whenever they want, and
spread themselves out around the track. At the tone, the clock is ready
to start, as soon as the first car crosses the line. The race clock
starts for each following car whenever they cross the line, so there are
no more first turn pile-ups. Something else that nobody misses is
frequency clips. Fewer than ten racers are running the old style
crystals - everyone else has switched to the new DSS style radios.

Chris Goetz took over the announcing duties as qualifying got underway.
He has a good way to make every race on the track sound like the World
Championships, and heís constantly providing good information on whatís
going on.

Qualifying ran smoothly and efficiently. At the end of the first round,
the qualifying standings were printed - see below:

Thanks for the free pics Mike. They look great. I'm wondering what's the story behind the inflateable Rasta Hat?
