Okay, I'll be upfront about this .. I know nothing about RTRs. I seen a couple here and there, but I never paid much attention to them. What 1/10th On-Road .12 Engine RTR would you recommend to a family member or friend? Which ones would you tell them to absolutely avoid?

Yes, I'm making a list! Please add to the list if don't see something listed. If something is no longer available or isn't right (i.e. not 1/10th, not .12 engine), please point that out as well.

Its simple, they are newbies. So there going to crash it alot. There only smart more is to buy what ever the LHS stocks parts for.

If this is like the Hobao GPX4 Pro, it's my choice. Pull start, strong, rear exhaust and good race starting point.

More plastics, prebuilt, I think it has the older NON ED transmission designed for less powerful engines. Still a good car, wood screws, starter box required, rear exhaust engine, semi race bred.

If part support wasn't an issue I would definitely go for the TM RTR. The quality is really good on those cars and it has a lot of race potential. Depending on the terrain if you are dealing with some debris then shoot for the Kyosho or the CD3. I've owned the Ofna CD3 pro and in capable hands the car can run with most cars. IMO it's close to a NTC3 in chassis layout however it is much more durable. The price for them have come down a lot however you do get a nice carrying case which would be helpful when he/she decides to take it to the track for a spin. The Kyosho is also a nice ride too. The GPX4 is a nice one too. Here's the order I'd go for if parts wasn't an issue.

TM RTR
CD3 Pro
NTC3 RTR
Kyosho FW05T

+1 HPI RS4 Evo very strong car for newbies or bashers well supported in local hobbie shops.
I had 1 when I 1st got into the hobbie & beat the crap out of it & still kept going my neighbor & myself would run them thru the snow up north when we got bored we had a blast with it highly recommend this brand over others especially on durability

i would agree that the HPI is a very durable RTR.

I too had one when they first came out and beat the piss out of it. It always started and never had any problems. The motor is easy to tune especially for a beginner. Parts are very easy to gaet as well.

I also like the kyosho fw-05.

You could always recommend an Kyosho Inferno GT. These are good beginner Nitro cars and take a good beating. Parts are readily available as well.

I have been looking at the Ofna CD3 pro rtr, part number 34713,

What is the difference between that and the CD3 sport RTR part number 34712

The CD3 pro RTR is the better optioned car. The engine has good power output for a beginner and has been reliable. It has aluninum wheel hexes, aluminum shock bodies, front and rear CVD's and a host of parts that are used on the CD3 Pro kit version of the car. The CD3 sport car has plastic bodied shocks, wheel hex mounts, front and rear dog bones instead of CVD's, etc.
Also the CD3 Pro RTR comes with a very good Ofna starter box. It is very powerful and can start any engine, no matter how tight it is.

GPX4:
PRO version (Centax clutch + rear exhaust motor) is my choice for newcomers yes Im deviating from RTR slightly as it's a kit I think. Drivers Ive recommended to take this path has been thoroughly satisfied and besides, onroad drivers have to pull down cars whether you want to or not.

TM JR: Too much too early, not enough too late. - Wood screws?
Im a TEAM MAGIC advocate, yet its a Pro Touring chassis with a starter box needed. Hence more batteries to charge. More gear to carry and ultimately more expensive over the long run. TM also produces the JS as a kit form and is a better option with a 3rd party spread spectrum radio if that's what you want to do. In hindsight, get them an G4EVO+ and let it be done with all the KFactory hop ups that make for longevity, wood screws?

FW05: Good option - No belts - Just cleaning - Standard sprung clutch?
I know a racing buddy that runs teh Fw05 and it's a really good choice too yet I think it's a side exhaust and onroad 1:10 cars with old school sprung clutches will require maintenance and parts in the first two weeks of running so hop ups to Centax clutches are almost an immediate expense.

If your neighbour is a newcomer, then best start with Glow Starter, Fuel Bottle, tuning screwdriver, car and radio.

Thanks for the help. I will probably get the CD3 pro rtr. One more question. I have not been able to find the CD3 pro kit version, considering building one. Anyone know where to find it?

I purchased all of my CD3 cars and parts from Nitrohouse (nitrohouse.com). They have the parts support, but I don't see the kit listed for sale. You may need to call them, the demand for the kits may not enough to stock them.
