The 10 starters in the main are shown in the left photo and listed in the last screen shot below.
The A-main as I remember it.
Ralph Burch and team X-ray started the race with a couple of lessons in mind from the preworlds. The car does not handle or produce fast laps for the final 5 laps without rubber on the rims. A flame out 3 laps before the end can be very costly. These lessons were incorporated into the race strategy.
The trial start came very smoothly with no incidents. The real start (short video to come) had an incident in about the middle of the field coming off the sweeper. That car was punted about 5 times before it finally came to rest. This created a split field the first five cars tightly bunched. This bunch held on for quite a while until refueling started. Robert Pietsch was leading, Ralph Burch approximately fourth. After the third fuel stop things started to go badly for various teams. Robert Pietsch had a complete runaway in the pits. This created quite the exiting moment for all teams in the pits at that time. See the second photo. He came out of the pits in last place. In the mid part of the race following this incident Ralph had gradually taken the first position. Cars were taking on tires about this point. Some cars were taking 40 seconds to take on tires. Several cars flamed out requiring tires and then a restart. Ralph's pit stop for tires was amazingly quick, maybe 17-20 seconds, the crowd actually cheered. At this point he was back on the track with Dirk Wieznewski hard on his tail in second. But Dirk had not taken on tires and did not for a long time. This had the effect of pushing Ralph until they had lapped almost all the field. Finally Dirk went in for tires and Ralph's lead was safe. Second place was in his rear view mirror but a lap behind. Ralph took on fuel at 5:00 minutes to go. That is cutting it real close. Because of his lead he took a splash and go fuel stop with 3 laps to go. He finished comfortably in first place with Terauchi Takehiro well back in the lap for second.

The third pic is Ralphs car on the last lap crossing the auxiliary loop. the last shot is Ralph just after crossing the finish line at the end of the race. Track must have been 140F plus!

but the weird thing is they dont even make it waterproof by simply adding a balloon. How much weight is a balloon?

Congrats Ralph, USA, & Xray. His changing tire pit stop was only like 18 seconds, if he changed all 4 tires Wow that's quick. It took some other groups ~40 seconds during the tire change.

Chris Doseck had the funniest idea, he had a plate of lexan covering his throttle servo because his local pit guy usually floods his car.
