Default Help with Engine Upgrade on OLDSKOOL HPI RS4

Hi all, I’m in some desperate need of some help..

Both my brother and I use to Race our HPI RS4 (Very first series) many years ago,
Now we have still been bashing them around for years but not racing.
We have pulled them out of the cupboard and dusted them off .We thought it might be time to get back into racing and thought we would upgrade from the tiered old 15FE Hpi engines to something more beefy..
So to cut a long story short, I scored a Brand new Old Stock OS 12 engine and my bro scored a brand new Old stock RB 12 engine.

Now back in the day I know people where upgrading engines (Nova's, OS, Force ect..) with no issues at all, but for some reason we cannot get either of these engines to fit properly in our cars….

We have adapted engine mounts, and put new flywheels and added our Hpi Clutch bells, but the shafts seems to be too short and wont line up with the 2speed gears, and if we move the engines across to mate the gears it wont mate with the chassis holes..

Has anyone had these experiences?
Was led to believe that as long as the engine was a 12 or 15 it would fit this model car, but there is a definite difference in shaft lengths..

I will get some pics up tonight of what is going on.

Hey FastHarry

Thanks for your help, I will have to take a look tonight, but I'm thinking the new engines we have are very similar to the Pilot shaft one.

It looks the same as the HPI ones, just not as long, as the HPI one uses an extender that screws onto the threaded end of the crank, that actually helps keep the flywheel in place as well as holding the springs for the Clutch.

Here is the link - hpiracing.com/graphics/instr/a910p1.jpg

I'll definately take some pix tonight.

My biggest concern will be no being able to use these engines..

The engines that had screw on pilot nuts were the ones HPI used ( as well as everyone else at the time)...... The pilot shaft engine( or SG shaft) as they were called did not use a pilot nut, the nut was an integral part of the crank...... These engines started to get popular in tenth scale( they always had them on 21's) when the serpent impulse came out..... They were nice because they ran truer, and there was no loosening of the nut as it didn't have one.....( though they still used a reg style nut to hold down the clutch assembly and flywheel...)

If you were able to screw a pilot nut on, then you have the right TYPE of crank, just not long enough.....

if you go here...
http://www.hpieurope.com/instructions.php?lang=en

and go to page 35...you can see the R40 clutch set up that used a SG shaft engine

Narr unfortunately not.. the Nut will not fit these cranks,
Hence the reason I'm stressing about it, as I have no idea on how to fix this problem...

Thanks again

the old school rs4 uses a long shaft threaded.

I own one with a .12cv-rx on it and a mega pipe, still rips for a 12 year old car.
