There were no such thing as "over the counter" starter boxes back in the day(early nineties and before). Most were home made from hand held R/C airplane type starter motor/wheels.

I would remember to take my starter everytime I go to the track for fear of needing to use that thing!!!. I may have to pick up buts of engine.

Yep, The modern racer doesnt know how lucky he is to have all these great tools available over the counter. I still to this day use my homemade 1:8th starter box with the said airplane starter and a wheel.

Even tools are better now. Back then we measured the angles with a protractor and lenghts with a vernier. No special set up stations or boards etc to help us. We just got the cars as close as possible to the set up and drive them.

Most people will laugh at this but its true. With the early 1:8th flatpan cars you had to set the car up at the correct point coming onto the straight as they would run in a big long bow shape. The torque steer from the rear diff on the 2WD Flatpan car made them the ultimate challenge to set up perfect without tweak (remember we didnt have tweak stations at all until we started making homemade ones in the early 90's. The first of these didnt even have bubble levels. We just put the car on and kept adjusting until the bar didnt move).

I don't think he's online anymore.
He posted a picture in the "Post Your Car Pic Thread".
