ZX12 Legal Race MS

Just a heads up for anyone getting one of these engines.

I just pulled mine apart to have a bit of a look inside as I do with all new engines. There was a little bit of swarf burr still in the crank left over from the manufacturing process. It was on both sides of the crank intake window, still attached to the crank. Not a big drama, just one of those things we should all be checking before running in a new engine. Oh the joys of mass production. It was easily removed with a light pass with a carbide dremel tip, just enough to de-burr and not alter intake timing. (I want to see how this puppy runs out of the box)

The engine looks the goods. Very nice infact. The attention to detail is fantastic. The backplate is scouped eitherside of the machined flat for piston clearance. I love the carb retaining system, it grips the carby from both sides, rather than just one.

Just have to get my hands on a non EFRA crank now...

Tried running in engine yesterday evening.
Fired couple of times and died after a few seconds...
Then receiver went crazy. Flat RX batt.... :(
I think starter box batt also a bit low. Instead of spinning the flywheel, it stops when the flywheel is pressed against it... %$#@*&!

Charged RX batts. Will try again tonight.... :sneaky:

I guess it's even worse when the engine is new as you need to crank the flywheel of a virgin piston sleeve.

Get a good 12V gel cell. Cheap too. Should give you enough juice for a whole weekend. If you have a UPS lying around, you can use it to charge your gell cell. It will detect and cut off and float charge automatically. Gell cells need to be charged constantly unlike NiCD and NiMH.

Did you also get the Rx pack second hand? Be careful... It may already be weak. Best is to get a new one. Don't skimp on Rx packs when it comes to nitro.

I'll PM you where to get cheap Rx packs and gel cells.

1st impression

Hi guys,

Engine run in yesterday.
Did a few laps on the track at LHS.
Rough concrete surface.
Track is quite short, only ran with 1st speed.

Running stock setup with front diff.
Off throttle turn-in was good, but car scrubbed off too much speed upon turning in.
Car pushed wide when powering out.

Also, felt the clutch engaging a bit late.

Will re-adjust clutch and stick to current setup and tray somemore, to get my fingers familiarised first.

All in, happy with the car... :)

Its best to tune the handling after you've completed the engine run-in and you're driving it on the track using both gear speeds.

I'd suggest tightening the clamp collar on the front diff to get better steering out of the corner. You'll lose a bit of turn in probably but just tighten bit by bit and see.

Thanks guys,

Will try tightening the front collar.

Does the Mega Race Pack come with the 203001 (EFRA 2607) exhaust system?

Cheers, Mark.
