Then to top it all off the pinion gear removal tool was utterly pointless. It couldnt remove a pinion at all. I got the mugen pinion removal tool and its too small for certain pinions. So now once I get my mugen I can remove pinions no problem.
if you have the old mugen pinion tool it won't be any good either because the clutchbell and pinions are smaller sized than the Mtx3 clutch is.
i haven't driven an R40 but changing from my G4 to the Mugen first time out it was quicker than my old car.
once you set them up in their sweet spot you will be kicking some opponent but AI
I wnt from the B main to the A main straight away, the first day

I had to use a pliars with the R40 pinion removal tool. I'd wrap the round tool around the clutch bell, pin it with the pliars, then use the pinion tool to get it off. It indeed was annoying and one time I broke the CB holder.

There are a couple of things like that, that is annoying. The clutch, two speed, setups. I still love my HARA kit, but its is time to move on. HPI have not developed this car. I don't think Hara is brave enough to take this car and run against the fast cars of today. So why should we? Maybe if HPI bring out a new kit or upgraded HARA kit, we can use this car to be competitive again.

I picked up my MTX-4 kit today. I will keep my R40 as a practice car and for driving in the streets for now, until HPI upgrade this car.(Maybe)

My friend gave up on his MTX4 as he couldn't get it setup right so I may sell him my R40 and radio for a good price to get him back on the road. Sure I'll have to buy spare parts and such if I buy the Mugen, but I have two months or so till nitro sedan practice starts.

Sadly I found out that the price I thought I could get an mtx4 for was more or less a trick on advertising. Thought acehardwarehobbies (which is going out of business). Was quoting 40-50% off there website prices. I was for sure going to get a mtx-4 , but unless I can find a good deal my budget probably wont allow.

So looks like im sticking with the r40 a bit longer. Im probably just going to run this chassis into the ground , then hopefully by then something new will have poped up and sparked my interests.

But for those who are going mtx4 it is a good choice. You can believe that. Please report back what you guys think. As well maybe this thread will wake up some of the people at hpi/hot bodies that we need something new on the horizon to focus on rather than having the feeling that they care more for a monster truck than the cars that helped give them the start into this great hobby.

Winter rebuild is done. I might enlarge the engine mounting holes to get a better gear alignment. I am using the mtx3 clutch.

It's just a cover for when the air filter is off. Keeps crap out of the carb.

Thumbs up

It's great to see diehard R40 owners getting ready for the race season considering how old the car is I'm very impressed.

Ivan- Minus the few issues it's a well good car. I can still hang with the guys at the track with my old setup, but with the new goodies I bought I like the car even more. It's really hard to get rid of it since there are lots of R40 owners in the area who are beginners and somewhat rely on my for setups and tips. The LHS nearby also supports the R40 extensively as well as Mugen, Kyosho and Serpent.
