The mtx-4 is having trouble with its 2nd gear blowing out...some have this some dont. Mostly at big races , high grip and high power itll go.

The r40 2005 edition is nice. Is it as fast as the mugen not sure....it is cheaper though and if your familiar with hpi or a big fan its a plus. Ive done well and quite a few others have done the same.

In nitro touring cars its hard to get a true opinion. Since like I say no one has driven them all and if you have you havent had enough time in them. Id say there all pretty equal. The rest is up to the driver.

Glad I stuck with my R40. The other shop has the LW chassis for $40 instead of the $60. The graphite shock towers n such I won't get this time as I never really change the position - stock works great. I will get a oneway though and 4 gear diff mod since this R40 is nothing like when I built my R40. The only mods I have right now is the LW shafts, Lw 2speed, and 800 MAH pack/batt cover mod. The car is noticable lighter and with the .12TR is surprisingly fast.

I have a stock R40. I bought it used and the guy said he ran it only three times, so according to that its practically brand new. Now I looked at the original kit box it came in and the copyright says 2003 on it. But how would I know what year the R40 really is. I know there are different models out there. I would like to know which I have and what the appropriate upgrades would be to bring it up to present day spec. If anybody could help me with this I would really appreciate it.

Check the part # on the side. Then reference it on hpi or towerhobbies. Most likely its the stock 2003 r40 with standard purple lower chassis.

Also even if it was a 2004, you would upgrade to the 2005 / hara chassis , upper deck , gas tank and servo mounts.

This would make your car the most current as can be. Minus the cf towers , lw shafts and .8 lw 2speed and pinions.

Once complete with those upgrades youll pretty much have yourself a hara edition.

Also a little update on my r40. I got in the 3racing titanium mtx-3 pillow balls. Cant wait to install these. I also got some new aftermarket shock shafts (hopefully they fit). Cant wait to use these.

Ai,
Where would I find the part#'s for those upgrades, and will those upgrades turn my (most likely) 2003 R40 into a hara R40?
Thanks

http://www.horizonhobby.com/ - they are really the only ones with them and there a pretty good price too.

Yeah that minus the v2 shocks , youll have pretty much a full hara edition. I know at that point I wouldnt feel bad to say it was so.

Good luck with it.

Thanks for the help AI. One last question for you though. Where can I get those ellegi foams on the black rims like you got on your R40 you have pictured on your site? Did you buy them as a set or separately and glued them yourself? Also are foam rims different than Rubber tire rims, or can I use say HPI rims and glue any foams on them?
Thanks

Most current 1/10th nitro foam tires come pre-glued. I bought an eleggi set and painted it black with a flat black paint.

Painting them does not create any balance issues with the wheels? Cause I'll go ahead and paint mine then.

A light even coat should be fine. Unless you had like a lot of heavy paint on one side...it shouldnt be noticable at all. Even the weight addition overall will be pretty small.
