Hi, i'm new to this forum and a newbie to nitro rc cars...... I've been reading all the post in this forum on the r40, which made me decide to jump on this deal........ I have several questions but i'll just start of with the below.

I wanted to know if I could get some advice. I just purchased a used R40 for $250 (I'll list everything below) and I should be getting it this friday.
The person I got the car from hasn't used it in months, so it hasn't been started in who knows how long..... I wanted to know if I should bring it to a shop to the motor tuned and looked at or is that something i can do on my own...
The motor is a picco .15 and from what I was told it's tempermental and hard to tune (by the seller and a small lhs Planet RC in brooklyn 5ave)......
Also should I take the car apart and rebuild it or have that looked at too.... I'm not too sure where to begin once i get her....any advise on where to start once i get her?....
The deal also came with a starter box, how can I check it to make sure it's in good running order.... the seller did tell me that I need to get a harness to go from the battery to the charger on the starter box since he misplaced it.......
As I could see in the pic's the car and everything it comes with looked mint..... then again pictures can lie..... But at the price I got everything I thought it was a deal..... Would you agree.....?
I do have more questions, but I'll start of with this for now.....
Thanks for your help in advance.
Also does anyone know of any good LHS in the ny tri-state area...

Here are the details of the deal.....
Only thing missing is a radio and a battery pack...

10 tanks of gas through it during break-in, yes, 10 tanks of staring at the car watching it idle . After that I got to drive it 3-4 times

Purchase of HPI R40 with OFNA/Picco .15 engine already installed, HPI
servos, RD Logic Race Exhaust System, Inline Fuel Filter, Stainless
Steel Screws installed in place of cheap aluminum HPI bolts, New and never
used six spoke wheels with foam tired ( wide offset rear tires, and
smaller 24mm front tires), and a polished chassis plate.
1 VW Bora/Jetta Body, painted Pearl White w/tinted windows ( never
used)
1 Audi TT Body, Painted Silver (never driven on), with cotter pin
holders
1 Porsche 911 GT3 body ( mule/practice body), painted blue
4 Six Spoke wheels w/ foam tires ( mount on car) never used
4 16 spoke Wheels w/foam tires ( light use)
4 5 spoke Porsche "Turbo Twist" look-a-like wheels painted black .
4 Chrome "Aristo" look-a-like wheels, never used
4 Chrome "BBS" look-a-like rims, no wheels ( I had a set of toyo/hpi
tires which I lost, so they were never mounted)
Left over Porsche, BMW, Nissan, Audi, HPI, Pro-Line decals.
Suspension adjustment spacers along with Random HPI replacement parts
1 OFNA Racing Starter Box with Battery and charger.
Suspension adjustment tools
Glow Plug Ignitor with Charger
Bottle of Nitro Fuel
bottle of After Run fluid to keep engine from becoming during storage
OFNA Body tool for cutting perfect circles in Bodies

Thanks again for any help.....

I for one would tear the car down, take a look at the bearings and any wear parts and re assy the kit, that way when it comes time to race you have some ideal how the car goes togather if you break some thing. on the motor, take the back plate off and take a good look at he bearings and con rod play, you should get a good ideal on how the engine was run and taking care of after being run.aka after run oil and fuel settings. good luck with your new toy.

I wanted to know.............

Welcome to our group. It sounds like you got a decient deal on the car. The polished chassis raises a flag for me though. It almost seems like he polished it to get the scratches off the bottom. With all the sets of tires and bodies, it sounds like the car was run quite a bit. The best thing to do would be to strip down the car and put it back together, replacing any bent and worn parts. I bought 2 used R40's and did the same to both. I found worn and bent parts that you couldn't see. If you don't have an instruction book, you can download one from www.hpiracing.com . You might want your LHS to take a look at the starter box since each brand is a bit different.

Something is binding, start by removing the turn buckles and check your steering knuckes. ect

Thank you for all your replies........
Yeah, I think i am going to take her apart and build her from the ground up...
First I want to get the motor checked out by a lhs to make sure it's in good running order, then I'll take her apart when I have time.... It's getting cold here in ny so I doubt I'll get any run time before the snow hits...
When I build her back up I was thinking it would be a good time to upgrade some of the parts lightweight shafts and so... I guess while i'm in there I should replace the clutch, I've read in here that the centex clutch with hpi pin is a good replacement..
Any reconmendation what parts I should get while I'm building her back up?.....
I'm also thinking of getting the venom multi failsafe with the temp option.
Do you think i need to get a integy/hudy set-up also?..
oh, where would be a good place to order everything online if they don't have it at my lhs......
Thanks again for your help.

btw,i'm going to be using the r40 more as a racer and maybe a part time drifter here and there.... A friend of mine is gonig to give me his used first gen rs4, so I'm going to use that as my practice/beater to get use to handling nitros...
So I would like spend my money on the r40 than the rs4 making the r40 a strong racer.
I also don't have any tools or lubes at the moment, so i'm going to need some help on what I should get/need......
So any advice on what to purchase for my r40 would be greatly appreciated....thanks

I think the HPI LowWeight Chassis and the Purple Aluminum shocks are very popular options.

CF Shock Towers
Lightweight 2 speed shaft
HPI Competition Aluminum shocks
4 gear diff (ebay has tons)

rcmart.com is your friend for upgrades , as well as precisionrc.com and rcmushroom.com. I know there is one other place that has some hard to find r40 stuff...but its slipped my mind.

Also be sure to have a set of the silver and gold suspension springs. Also download some of the setup sheets from hpi-racing.com and kinda go along with what you see.
