Does anyone have any experience binding the mini spektrum receiver?

You use a bind plug, if you don't have one, make one. The two outside connections need to be shorted together. Plug in bind plug in the batt/bind slot. connect batt power to any of the other slots, and the light should be flashing. Hold down the bind button on the TX, while holding it down, turn on the TX and wait for the bind. Also, if you want to setup the "fail safe" position of the throttle servo, place the trigger in the position you want the servo to be in if anything should happen.
