How do you guys determine gear mesh as not to strip gears etc.?

maybe I should clarify, what Im talking about is between the engine and in my case on the NTC3 "drive shaft" (for lack of knowing another word).

what i do is, i take a piece of writing paper and stick it between the gears and then tighten. the paper gives u the right amount of space u need...
