Thanks for all the input guys.

I don't think the conrod is stretched because when I have the piston/sleeve out of the engine and push the piston up into the sleeve, it only gets within about 4.5mm of the top of the sleeve and then it will not go any further. It used to be able to go about a mm or so further.

If I can get the engine started it is quite fast, but it is nearly impossible to as even the larger starter boxes have problems turning it over.

defenetely you need to lap your piston to right size. I would do it if I face this case (no doubt about it). Just the question-which part of piston? If you will able to put large pic of your piston (side view), I might suggest something what to lap-top or center, most likely it will be center part of piston. i am sugesting to you do not try to run your engine before you fix this issue-you will ruin it.
