Default How to tell if an engine needs a new piston and sleeve.

I've got an engine thats had moderate use over the past 9 months. I think it might be due, but what are the tell tale signs?

if you can turn the flywheel with easy? "you might need a piston and sleeve"

if your engine lacks horepower? "you might need a piston and sleeve"

if your engine leans it self out? "you might need a piston and sleeve"

if your engine has over heated one time too many? "you might need a piston and sleeve"

if your engine doesnt seem to hold it carburator settings? "you might need a piston and sleeve"

Don't forget these..

If you can turn the crank/fly wheel with two fingers with fuel in the engine..

If you don't feel any compression when turing the flywheel/crank and covering the carb....

If your car dosen't go faster nomatter how lean you turn the hsn.....

If your friends are blowing you away then later come and look at you car..Then say"It looks ok, nothing wrong".......

Listen to the exhaust port as you turn the engine over. If you hear lot of hissing the p/s is longer sealing up. No compression=No power. And the slowest guy at the track just lapped you.

If you remove the piston and sleeve from the engine, and it comes out in more than two pieces.........time to re-up

Try a hotter plug as well to see if the power picks up and/or the idle gets better (i.e. lower number like a 6).

BTW, what motor is it? Has it been modified? What are the weather conditions you normally race in?

Its a standard GS15R from kyosho with no mods. It seems that the compression is fine, maybe the plug was just shot. I didn't have a spare with me at the track, but someone lent me one - but I think that plug was dead too.

I just got some more plugs, an OS A3 and A5. Maybe the carb needs a clean too.

Remove the piston and sleve check the piston for scuff marks and if the piston will go all the way to the top of the sleve (and maybe out a little) it needs replacing. By the way check your crank bearngs as well if they are sloppy or crunchy they will need replacing and will affect performance and tuning - Atlhough it sounds like you may have found your problem anyway.
