im new to rc and i am looking to get into on road, ive done a bit of a suss around talking to people and chasing prices.

ive found:

so far everyone says that the mugen mtx-4r is "THE CAR" at the moment, and this is what i will prob end up going with, but really id like to know what is best bang for buck,
i dont want to fork out a grand+ for a car and motor to find out that i can get an equivilent for say 700, as im only new too i prob wont be able to recognise the diff between the brands,

so id like to find out what is everyone elses thoughts on these models and their experiences with them

also whatother shops have people found good prices and service

the mugen by email reply works out to be close to $1100
MTX4R kit $580-00
Ninja .12 engine including pipe and manifold $550-00
Price as a package including postage $1090-00



is the mugen really worth $400 more?

To be competetive you'd want a better pipe/manifold than the HPI one, and I'm not a fan of the LRP engine.

you can get a new Kyosho V-one RRR for about AU$350 from hong kong/japan, and an OS TZ for around AU$200, then you just neeed a pipe, radio gear and starter. My pipe was around $AU80 shipped and included a manifold, it's also one of the best pipes to use with many engines and waaay better than the HPI one from rchobbies.

As for performance, if you intend to race on a treated permanent track you'd be better off with a kyosho or mugen than the HPI, but if you'll be racing on parking lot tracks the r40 is as quick as everything else.

One thing that's also worth thinking about is parts, the R40's are considerably cheaper than those for newer cars but replacements wont be available for as long as for newer chassis

Ive had the the R40 and the Kyosho. I used to think that the R40 could hang, but after I bought the Kyosho, wow, what a car. Its miles ahead of the R40. You can get a VoneRRR WCE Evo, for about $390, and it comes with all the bells and whistles. As far as engines, I'd go with the Picco Jl Red Dot. I ve had the the Picco and the Ninja, At first I thought the Ninja was great, but after running them both back to back today, the Ninja is gonna be just a backup motor, until I can get another JL. You can get both items from Team Kamikaze.

Before you decide, take a look at the G4s RTR.

It is race ready with a motor, pipe, radio for under $425. If you like on-road nitro and decide to stick with it, you can upgrade parts as your skill improves.

Just a thought.

at the end of the day,go for spares availability as well as tech support.check your local track,c what is popular and remember,1 car is not always better than the other.ITS ALL PREFERANCE .make the choice that would fit you and ure pocket.think long term and availability of spares.for me personally,i PREFER a MUGEN.cheers and good luck to you

one thing to keep in mind is that the r40 has been discontinued already. so parts might be a little difficult in some areas.

of the 3 my vote is for the kyosho. The kyosho RRR evo has wc has great quality parts and a smooth drivetrain. and in the end its a great handling car

yep JLR red dot is a great engine, that's gonna be my next one. The WCE seems to be out of stock most places at the moment - kyosho have stopped making them, but I believe a new one is due at years end - so that leaves you with the KRF and a heap of hop ups to buy

my r40 can hang on

i think the r40,in a parking lot track,can still be a great car....esp with parking lot track racing usually incurring some repairs nightly,and the r40 parts are cheap,the car very easy work on.....amaizing,when you consifer the car was designed in 2002.....

that being said,Iwould probably look at a serpent or xray....

and THAT being said,I would wait till next year to buy anything.....with xray raising the bar,you know some new stuff is coming...

Xray's havent had much of an impact in Oz yet (impulsesv6 is aussie too), a few guys have them at the clubs I race at but so far none of the top guys have gone for them. Serpents are very rare out here which means you'll be out of luck getting help with setup or a spare part if you break something at the track. Best bet from these aspects here is mugen or kyosho, and since they are similarly fast you might as well go kyosho and save $100 bucks
