I was thinking of getting the Mugen MTX4r but I can get the r40 really cheap.

Is the r40 any good?

How does it compare to the mugen mtx4?

Is it going to cause me any reliability problems?

I bought a cen ct4 and it was the biggest pile of crap ever, breakdown every time I took it out.

you will find the r40 is a very old car soparts supply might be the biggets problem. id go with the mtx4 is the parts are easy to come by in your area

Except for problems with the rear camber links stripping and I believe the front uprights the pillow ball can pop out from time to time. Otherwise its a pretty reliable car. You can also fix those two problems with different camber links and or longer turnbuckles in the rear. Even thicker will work. I got some from lunsford.

The mugen so far has been a good car. Except I broke my rear arm and hinge pin. With what I would call a light tap. Now Ive said this before it might be a fluke. I have a friend with the car who has done some smacking and its fine. I think I just caught my wheel wrong on the edge. I have since purchased hardened hinge pins and will see if that does the trick. The only well known downfall to the mugen is the 2nd spur gear likes to strip on certain cars for almost unknown reasons. Theres is like a 10 problem check and remedy guide setup on the forums to follow. Ive done all this and so far my car is doing ok. I still havent put lots of use on it yet , but we will see.

The RRR I also hear is good for reliability. As with probably all newer cars. Thats including the Serpent 720 and the new XRAY NT1. I would think of all the cars the nt1 might end up being the most durable. But im sure either way it all comes down to your driving and track. Some tracks are brutal , some are setup to give some when smacking walls. Some have slow or high speeds.

I can get the R40 Brand new as package with motor and tuned pipe for AUS $599.

The mugen MTX4-r will cost me $599 no motor, no tund pipe.


I am in 2 minds about which car to get because I am beginner racer and dont know that much about tuning nitros yet. I think it night be a waste to spend huge dollars because I wont be that good on the track anyway. I dont mind spending money later on if I stay racing.

Nobody races an R40 at major events.

IMO, top 5 cars (not in any order) are:

- V-ONE RRR WCE Evo
- MTX-4R
- 720 07
- NT1
- G4S

If you're looking for something inexpensive to start with, get the G4S RTR.

If its the stock R40 , dont get it. Only get the 2005/Hara edition. Otherwise its a huge waste.

I would also lean towards the G4s RTR.
I believe it would get you in the game
with a pretty decent platform. It can be upgraded to the fully race spec G4S. It all depend on parts availability via locally or online.

I've raced R40's for3 years......I'm racing it this year......I don't see a reason to switch,as I haven't seen any car that would be faster in my hands...the car is stable,has alot of rear bite,easy to work on,responds to tuning changes without being overdramatic,and parts are cheap....

That's a pretty weak argument for the R40. I can see the same thing being said about the horse and carraige. " It's very stable; the horse responds well to my commands without being overdramatic; extremely easy to work on; and it doesn't bite. That's great except it's WAY slower than an AUTOMOBILE.
