anyone have a good lead on where to buy a durometer?

I'm looking for the type with the dual dials to record the max reading

mitutoyo makes some, here is a link. dont know if their durometer will work for this application. on the site, you can locate a dealer

any idea what type durometer I need for SURE. I'm getting different input's from varying manufacturers.

REX offered for me to send a few different hardness of tires and check them out for me.

Not many.....


Jaco says the proper durometer type is an "Asker C" type.

I can't wait to go back next year, I hope to be able to race more that just 2 Quals.

I had a great time anyway, much better than many other race weekends I've attended. How far are you from "The Glen"?

Those prices can't be right, I've seen too many people at the track with durometers for them to have paid $500. maybe they're getting them used from pawn shops or something like that but I believe I've only seen one style in use, but it's not any of the ones listed in these threads so there might be a slightly lower but usable grade out there.

There are quite a number of different durometers to measure different things. You would have to get the brand and model number from these guys to figure out exactly what these are using. If you have the wrong type of durometer, it doesn't matter how cheap it was.

I guess it really depends on what you plan on getting out of the measurement. As I understand it, getting consistent accurate readings without a stand is not so easy. If you're just trying to measure the shore relative to other tires, then it's either a higher or lower value. If you're trying to get some type of NIST-based measurement for re-rating tire shores, that's another story.

I find this funny since Jaco has used nothing but color coded compounds until their fairly recent entry (couple years) into the nitro tire market. Where is Jack? What's the scoop, fill us in?

Read 'em and weep! They are $450+ for the PTC durometers and the price has gone up in the past few years. The MaxMod ones are like $180-200 if you can find them (I am pretty sure MM is out of biz). I have a MM as well and it is a fine tool and awesome for the price.

I talked with PTC at length and read their instructions as well as the ones from Paris. You always take multiple reading and then average to get your number.

I am sure I posted this long ago but I learned all of my durometer knowledge the hard and expensive way. Bought a PTC off ebay and found it wasn't right. Talked to PTC and they explained that while the Paris ones weren't being made anymore, they had the parts to update mine and they recalibrated it. I was told it is a "modified OO scale" with a custom indentor. They changed the spring, indentor, guage face, bezel, and recalibrated and I was good to go with a Paris duro. Total cost out the door ended up a tick over $400 and that was years ago.

Thanks fraz!

I will get a foam tire KB up after I get more of the engine KB done. Then we'll have all this info on foam, truers, truing, splits and durometers all in one place.
