I have a box stock OS TZ 3-port motor in my FT NTC3, unless you are running a very large track with long straights this is more that enough motor. I've won like 5 out of 7 races with this thing against much better cars and engines, it runs cool, and is very reliable. So unless you are doing some big track racing, you do not need the big Mod motors. I had a CRF also, very high reving motor, just did'nt suit my driving style, I sold it and kept the OS. The CRF was very fussy about loosing it's tune and such. BTW I run the blue factory team Associated pipe on my OS and it works just fine

i used to run a sirio sti or evo 3 in my ntc3. as long as you keep checking the drivetrain it should be fine. i also used the team associated factory blue pipe with these engines.
the shaft drivetrain together with the torque of the sti made it very quick out of corners so i had to gear it up!

Been running JL picco engine for a while, tell you the truth it's in the same power band with my other $400 mod. engines. Picco has more linear power band, more consistent and idle really really great, plus picco glow plug is really good too. Just my .02

Sirio EVO 3. Heres a short little vid of a AB Modified version 5 port on a TC3 with RD Logics pipe. This engine is sick and pulls on everything here at the local track. And there are alot of RB modded novarossi and Rody modified RBs, OS speeds ect... Deffinatly a good fit for the TC3!

The OFNA JL 12 has been very good. No issues with durability and they are as fast as anything out there. The best part is they are under $200.

edit: ok it wasn't even a mugen like I thought...hell what do I know.

Serpent 710 he said (I called him).

and don't ask me why I said MRX-4R because I have no idea why I thought that at all or even why I typed it.

In that case Dredd,, better call up your friend again and congratulate him on his engine.. I don't blame you when you said earlier his car was fast. I drove my friend's RRR a couple of weeks ago with the OS Speed and that things ripsss.. It's such a screamer and very easy to tune. I immediately short listed it as one of my next engine buys...

Sorry if I hurt your feelings earlier.. I hope you weren't offended.

not at all, I'm a noob still so makes and models blur in my mind and I can read a name and that sticks in my head. I met this guy at a local LHS and he helped me out understanding some stuff...in fact he was picking up that engine which is why I remember it specifically. Anyhow, I told him I wanted to get a better car (more of a racer) and he said to give him a call and we'd meet up and he'd let me take his for a spin once he got it set. There is a small track setup near the shop and I played around for a few minutes (carefully heh).

To get back on topic... if I wanted to upgrade the SH .12 in the G4S RTR to something with more power what would be the best bang for the buck drop in? Note: I don't have $300+ to drop on an engine which is why I'm getting a RTR until I can afford to buy the hop-ups and go up piece by piece. This topic outlines the best of the best but what is the most cost effective solution for someone on more of a budget?

According to ShermanSim: a car with the JL.picco motor blew past him at a race driving his car with an OS speed engine meaning for less than $200.00 you can have one of the fastest and well priced motor. If I were you I will go with the JL Picco motor.

You are correct scarlet, the JL's are the best bang for your buck! it can hang with $300.00 to $400.00+ priced motors
