if you cant get the tool in to measure your gap, do you have the pinions on the right way ? the second pinion has a cut out so that the 1st pinion sits inside the second pinion just a little bit. if its around the wrong way, then the 1st pinion sits out further, then you may have problems getting your tool in to set your gap. as for the bearings, not sure what you mean about them from sliding up ?

I have the gears on right that is one thing i checked. What I mean about the bearings is that the smaller ones can slide right through the clutch bell.

once the clutch is together and shimmed right, the bearings wont be going anywhere. i dont have any cars here or my stuff. so i cant see where you are going wrong with the shimming. if you cant get the tool in, then the 1st pinion is obstructing the tool from working ?

Did u use the big bearing then two smaller bearings with no spacers or shims in between?

I put it together just like the manuel shows. from what I can tell the gear is higher than the thrust bearing and if i put a shim that comes with the set under the thrust bearing it falls through because it showes to set up clutch gap without the clutchbell bearings.

yeah i can see whats happening here. maybe try using all the bearings in the clutch with no shims. may stop the thrust bearing falling in side with no bearings fitted. if the bell bottoms out on the shoe, and moves in and out a bit, then there is no harm using the bearings to use your setting tool.
