There are actually special glow plugs to use with ethanol fuel (OS Be3).

Mixing in a few parts of ethanol might work with normal plugs but the thing that makes glow engines 'tick' is the reaction between the methanol and platinum in the glow plug. Platinum acts as a catalyst.

... and it turns out the thread is different from methanol plugs so they won't fit.

Have tryed it , we had a bad idle. Probably a different number glowplug and/or compression setting was needed.

Ethanol would be better because it provides more energy so I was told.

But why? Methanol is not the price maker of the fuel.
