A question about tire mounting
how are you guys doing it how many vent holes? sizes?where? post away;):batman: and why
|
I've seen a couple of racers put holes on the inner sidewalls, but only if it's going to be dry conditions.
Personally, I put them in the center of the tread, so that any water that gets in the tire from running, or even cleaning them, will work its way out. I typically do three holes, spaced evenly around the outside (about every 120 degrees). I use a leather punch, and the hole size is a tick smaller than 1/8". I believe it's the third one up from smallest. |
I do two, center of tread also. Punch one, turn 180° and do the other one.

I noticed the old aka buggy tires dont have n e holes and the truggy old tires have one small one in the center. It would be nice if a pro posted what they do and why. I think the smaller and less the better less balloning = more contact patch.

There is no correct way to do this. you ask 10 pros you get 10 different answers. You will need a Leather Punch Tool. I got mine from Harbor Freight for 4 bucks. I just use the second to smallest hole on it. IF my wheels have holes, I use a piece of tape on the inside of the wheel to seal the holes.
I use the leather punch to put 2 holes in the center of my tires. The wholes for my buggy is about 2mm for truck about 3 mm.. the point is so dirt and sand can get into the wheels thought the hole in the wheel. the hole is to vent the air as the rubber stretches during acceleration. By putting the hole in the tire, it lets the air vent with out sucking in dirt, sand and water. Tires should have min ballon affect if you use the correct foams. AKA reds are the best i think. Each tire manufacture is different and product for different tire feels. The older wheels had holes in them. I dont have any recently over the past year that have wholes in them. Hope this helps. |
