speed/gear issues

hi i have noticed that my 1/10 scale hsp warhead buggy has had some speed issues lately it wont go into 2nd gear i do not wan to spend a fortune on fixing it before having a go at fixing it myself, does anyone have an idea to one identify issue and two how to fix it?
I would much appreciate help :)
