Help on how to customize cut Starter Box
 

Hi Everyone

Right I bought my first Starter Box and to my surprise it does not fit my truck.
Very annoying and it's suppose to be universal/multi whatever they call it, "what a load of crap"
Anyway been on the net trying to see if other people have had the same problem as me and I did find quite a few. What I also found out is that a lot of guys have adapted there boxes by cutting them and lifting the wheel to make it fit or shall I say work.

My question is has anyone done this...
How did you go abouts doing it?
What tools did you use?
Any tips or techniques I should use?
Also did you have to cut the chassis too?

I have a fair idea what to do but want to make sure I do it right before I start.

It's a "Kyosho Multi Starter Box Pro 2.0 (KYO36209)"
My truck is a HSP Savagery Pro also known as Redcat Racing Landslide 21.
But I've modded it so much it's not even stock anymore

Is this your vehicle? Looks pretty standard. But if you went from a small block engine (.18) to a large block (.21), you may need a larger flywheel.

I have this box and noticed I'll have to swap the wheel around to fit my MP9. Looking at the instructions, there are a bunch of different ways to align/setup this box.

Which way do you have the wheel facing now?

Yes this is the correct one and I started thinking if it was possible to put in a bigger flywheel which is a great idea.
Do you know where and who does the biggest flywheel 3 shoe?

Its facing the correct way, moved to right position, but something someone caught onto on another thread where I placed this question is...
My engine has been upgraded to a 28 roto-start and has engine mounts and spacer mounts so it sits a bit higher from the chassis then a stock 18 hence why the starter wheel does not reach.

What are you thinking?

Dang that's a big one Just make sure it isn't to big like poking through the bottom of the chassis.

Yea haha I measured up and it seemed it had ample space either way so fingers cross seems all ok on paper.
From where I'm standing the bigger the better, hope my theory is correct but will be for sure when it gets here. But without a doubt it's one step closer to making my starter box work and maybe may get away from cutting it.

Apologies for the late reply, the day got away from me.

I was thinking of the wheel position when shipped, I had to switch it around to fit my MP9, but you said it was facing the right way.

Yea originally when shipped the position was set vertically and the wheel was on the left side so I had to relocate it to a horizontal position and move the wheel to the right side so it would contact the flywheel. One of the reason's I bought this starter box is because of the universal position's and I do want to buy another truck in the future and one thing I don't want to do is buy new box for every new truck.

Right thought I give you guys an update been a bit busy cause of work so didn't get around to fitting the flywheel sooner.
Anyway finally fitted the larger flywheel and "Wow" what a difference, it's a bit late in the night so can't test the flywheel working but as it stands visually it so much lower, but not low enough that it sticks out or right next to chassis hole, sits a good 5mm away.
It looks very likely with the bigger flywheel it may work without any modding to the starter box the only problem I have noticed which was something mentioned on another forum is the chassis hole is not bigger enough and one side of the edge is touching the starter wheel. So it looks like I may need to make the hole under the chassis bigger from one side, which to be honest isn't too bad as it's an easier mod to do rather than modding the starter box.

I've put spacers (washers) underneath the plate the motors are mounted on in other boxes to raise the wheel. You just need to make sure if you raise it enough that the wheel doesn't hit the opening of the box when depressed. That, and you may need longer screws that screw into the plate from the bottom of the box, assuming that's how Kyosho does it.
