first buggy for racing, your suggestions?
I would like to get in to racing in the spring, and I would like to start with a nitro buggy, what would you guys recommend for a racer?
I'm not new to the hobby, so I have plenty of knowledge, just never raced so I will have to learn all of that. Local hobby shop parts supply doesn't matter, they mainly carry traxxas. My budget is around $500, maybe a little more depending on what life throws at me, I will probably go used.
Any help would be great. Plus any tracks in kalamazoo, I know of one, but that's it.
Thanks
Nick

With a $500 budget it will not be easy to go new, here is what a start up nitro will cost my buddy, and he has the radio equipment already....I think used might be a better way to go

Most first time racers dont start with a $900 Kyosho.
Look at Hot Bodies (D8) for a really inexpensive but capable buggy to race. You can get a used one for $150
2 used servo's $100
Used starter box $50
New engine pipe combo- $200- dont buy a used engine!
1 set of tires to get started -$45
RX battery, glow starter, glow plug, fuel $75
For slightly over $600, you are racing with top notch gear

Ya I'm not getting a $900 kyosho.
I do have radio, just need another receiver. Basically just truck, engine, pipe, servos, bump box and receiver battery and I'm all set.
Thank you guys for all the help, I might be selling my extra savage for spare cash.
Any recommendation on engines would be great also

I've heard both the d8 and d8t are great race vehicles, and good price. I always go back and forth between buggy and truggy. For a beginner racer, which would you recommend? I'm pretty sure I want a buggy, but I love the truggy look, just want everyone's opinion.

Most important, is to choose a strong class to run where there is competition.

truggy is easier to drive and you can take it anywhere and play with it. Tires are almost double the cost but last 30% longer than buggy tires. Buggy is more nimble and IMO its faster and more fun to drive. Also much larger class of racers for buggy. One thing to keep in mind when deciding is that a Truggy will need a more specific engine. Truck is twice as heavy as a buggy so you need more power and more torque from your engine.

Ya thats why i was thinking of getting a buggy, so i can hone in my skills, plus my personal track won't be very large. Plus the buggy will be a little cheaper to start out with it seems like.
I believe both the buggy and truggy are still popular around here.
