I'm trying to use an xb808 Fioroni tractive front diff in the xb9 but it doesnt mesh well with the diff pinion gear in the xb9, so Im wondering if I can take one from an xb808 to use with the xb808 fioroni front diff?
If its the original 808 then no, the front and rear bulkheads are completely different because of how the pinion attaches to the center driver shaft. What is happening when you try and use shims on the bearings of the diff? Does the fioroni diff have the same crown gear? I believe the XB 9 uses 43 tooth crown gears with either a 12 or a 13 tooth pinion. If the crown gears is the same then the stock pinion should mesh as I believe all 1/8 scale buggies use the same gear pitch for the crown and pinions, albeit some have helical cut gears and others have straight cut gears, but they should pretty much be the same as far as pitch is concerned.

theoretically if you use the pinion from a 2011 808 which is the same style as the xb9 but 10T instead of 12T then it will fit. The problem comes with the gear ratios. All 808 models ran 10/43 ratios to go with the 16/42 center diff setup.. bearing in mind the 808 center drivetrain spins 40% faster than the xb9 does you are going to be way under geared . Basically the exact opposite of the optional 41T overdrive. you will get some very weird handling with the front turning way slower than the rear. The only way it will work is to use the same 10T pinion in the rear with an 808 diff and use the 808 center gearing. I have my sons 808E setup like this although obviously the center ratio doesn't matter for the E buggy. He has 2011 pinions front and rear with xb9 cvd's and his 808 diffs..just meant I could do away with the eternally crap 13x19 bearings.

Thanks for the great replies guys!!
The 808 is the 2010 model so not the oldest. I can tell you wat the problem is. It doesnt need shimming, it fits just fine in the gear box, I can completely close the gear box and have it perfectly installed. The problem comes with the mesh. When you go to spin the front wheels the mesh is pretty damn bad and isnt runnable. This is with no shims and the diff completely sitting in the housing as if it were installed and ready to drive. So you are saying if I put the 2011 pinion in there technically it will work, but the ratios will be off as I knew that would be a factor but how bad can it be?

pretty bad actually.. the front will be turning way slower than the rear.. 10/43 is .232 revolutions of the crown gear per rev of the pinion.. 12/40 is .3 so if you ONLY swap out the front end you will lose almost 25% of the drive to the front wheels.. take the overdrive front xray make.. 10/41T makes .243. so to get the front to grip better with the overdrive gear xray made it turn 0.11 revs faster.. you are talking about your front end turning 2 to 3 times SLOWER than that.. I should think apart from burning up tyres the rear of your buggy is going to want to overtake the front. at the very least it will give you some strange handling. you will have to do the rear as well and probably the center diffs too.. you are gonna really really want to use that fioroni diff mate.. be cheaper to buy a fioroni for xb9 than change all the diff crown and pinion gears,

The Crown gears are not the same and thats probably the root of my problem. The sizes are different. I believe the XB9 stock uses a smaller tooth count (40) and the 808 used 43T. The Fioroni Crown gear tooth cuts are different then the stock crwon gear. I hop e they will mesh okay with the right gearing.

By the way to use the 2011 10T pinion you also need the 808 2011 or xb9 diff bulkheads as they both use 8x16 bearings , you will also require xb9 center driveshafts. So to make it work properly you need 2 x xb9 bulkheads.. 2 x xb9 cvd's .. 2 x 808 2011 10T pinions.. rear 808 diff to match the front and unless you want it way slow overall 808 center diff with 42T gear.. You know how much that lot is gonna cost you? do fioroni not simply do a 40T crowngear for the diff?

actually sorry you have the xb9 so wont need to buy cvd's or bulkheads. . still.. expensive mess about.. 808 43T pinions are 40+ bucks a piece . you're probably still talking a $200 conversion

Okay here's the skinny:
Its super funny you mention getting the Fioroni XB9 diff! Well guess what, I did!! I have the Fioroni XB9 center diff. The problem is that they only decided to make the center diff for this car UGGGGH and thats where the Fioroni 808 front diff comes into pay for the front on the XB9. So I am running the Fioroni XB9 center diff. I was told the 808 Fioroni diff would work so i pulled the trigger on it. So i have it sitting here with me and dont want it turning into a paper weight!! A rediculously expensive one! Worst case I can put it in my 2010 808E but dont really run that car anymore.

And Ive already looked for replacement ring gears for the diff. None I have found yet for the Xray. I found a Kyosho replacement though. But they are really hard to find.

that's really cool. Can you share where you found it? Maybe someone else would like to share in your joy.

I just converted mine with the RCmonster mount , x ray motor shim , and xb9e battery tray. I cut the nitro radio tray right behind the battery compartment and its a perfect fit. Looks great, and leaves lots of room for receiver and transponder. I had to add 2 shims under the motor mount to raise it a few mm. I would use the X ray mount if its in stock, I like the way it works better.

The shim is necessary to make this fit perfectly . I did not have it at the time of this photo.
