question on plain smooth wheels
I always see plain wheels (white, yellow or black) being used for racing but to me it looks pretty dull and boring. I'm just wondering if these plain wheels have any advantage to the ones that have some kind of design on them like the 2-spoke one from PL.

I think the advantage is that they don't allow as much dirt to pack up on the wheels which make them heavier and out of balance. Also prevents things from getting caught in the wheel.

If you race your mind will change when you start to compete. I actually now like the look of the dish over the spoke and for many performance reasons.
1. You can see your wheels better from the drives stand
2. You can see how your car is steering better
3. You don't have to worry about the dish catching an 8 inch pipe nail
4. Rocks stuck in the spoke causing your wheels to go out of balance
5. When racing it just looks faster lol
6. One could argue but the dish wheels are stronger
7. Cleaning them is so much easier

When I first started in the hobby I felt the same thing you did. No offense but its a newbie thing. The spoke rims just looked cooler when we first started and when your new its sorta all about the look and going custom.

I am the opposite. I hate the look of dished wheels. I would rather see some cooler spoke designs come out. I run the dished JConcepts Mono Max wheels over their Rulux spoked wheels due to them being slightly larger in diameter which makes the tires perform better. Although I know some that run the Proline Split Six which is a very light spoke wheel that is of the larger diameter.

A better question is why are there only two basic colors for wheels - white and yellow? I see black wheels occasionally, I think Panther makes some, but what gives with only white and yellow? I know they are easy to see, especially over black wheels, but how about blue, orange, pink, green, something other than the standard white and yellow...yawn.

I believe they are because they're easy to see and match with almost anything. Not sure on that though.

dish wheels pack up bad with dirt, ive never understood why people say that they dont. i run both and prefer spoke, especially in the mud because the mud will fling out of the spokes rather than packing in the dish wheels and causing issues, ive had them get so caked up that my wheel was locking up. the Jconcepts spoke wheels are great, i run the O'donnell wheels now mostly but still like the jconcept spoked wheels. however, i have more dished wheels because everyone has them and they are easier to get in a hurry.
