Default Temp gun close or as good as exergen without high price tag?

Has anyone found a good temp gun close or as good as the exergen without the high price tag of the exergen? Not really wanting to spend $260.00 to $270.00 on a temp gun.

HPI Temp Gun, $30 and within +/- 2 degrees of the Exergen. I have tested it with a few Exergen's and the HPI one is only 1-2 degrees off.

I use a Pro Exotics/tempgun.com PE-3. Its as close to the exergen as I have found. I don't think they make them anymore though. Honestly the Exergen is the best.

I have one of these but it is still pricey. Bought it from the snap on truck, he let me make payments:

There is NO reason for anyone in this sport to pay over $50 for a temp. gun. The cheap ones are close enough. My $30 one is within 2* of the expensive ones.

There is absolutely no need to spend big money, even if someone lets you make payments. Be smart with your money ! It's common sense, if she makes smoke and power, it's good enough.

A used exergen?

But seriously, I don't even use exergen any more... A good ear and eye is all you need.

It's very true that you don't really need a temp gun. If its running good and making smoke just run it. Also if you practice a little you can tell with your hand when it's too hot.

If you like to be precise and tune by temp though, or if your using it for elec. or something. I have not found anything cheap to consistently be within 5 degrees of the exergen. I was using the odonell temp gun and had tested it a few times within a few degrees and then the other night it comes up 40+ degrees off. It's really your call how important it is but Exergen is for sure the top of the line and un-matched in my opinion.

I have an exergen and it is nice. But who says that it is accurate? What if the OD is spot on and the exergen is off by 40 degrees? We assume the exergen is the standard because it is the most expensive. Calibrate your less expensive one against an exergen and do the math to get to the "correct" reading . Spend the extra dough saved on fuel/tires...

I use a PE1 and its within 2-3 degrees as long as you keep where it reads clean. I clean it al the time.

this one is very close too: http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...auge-Stopwatch

but like people said there is no need to spend over 50 for one, i mean your not even supposed to tune by temp, tune by smoke and power , i got the PE1 free with some kind of coupon thing and still use it but i never really worry about temp, as long as its running good and smokes, thats gooed enough for me.

There is nothing on the market that matches the Exergen. A friend has 2 of them. One is over 15yrs old. It was bought when Ron Paris was doing his engine work. They both are accurate. It's a handy tool in your tool box. You get what you pay for. I have a raytech and it OK. I use the exergen when ever I can. It confirms what I'm feeling and hearing sometimes.

I find it hard to see the smoke trail most of the time. Maybe it's just me. I use my ear a lot of the time and feeling as well. It doesn't lie usually.

Guys forget they have doing this for a while and know what they are looking for and what the engine should feel like.

If anyone wants to trade a good exergen for my good raytech let me know.
