Poking holes in tires
I have a couple of sets of Proline VTR wheels/tires. There's no holes in the wheels since the foams are closed cell and I was told it's not needed, but I've read that I should have holes in the tire to release air pressure when things heat up. I don't want to drill/poke a hole all the way through as it would go through the foam also, so can I just take a pointy object and poke a hole in the tire (trying not to hit the foam)?
Is a vented tire necessary? |
Two 2mm holes with a precision drill on opposite sides of the wheel not tyre is enough for the air inside the tyre to be displaced. IMO I dont recommend the tyre carcass to be punctured as these days you cannot make a precise pinhole airvent in the soft compound rubber. Its easier to put these vent holes on the wheels inside. The only drawback is that fine sand and moisture will be able to enter the sponge and dirty things inside.
It is crucial for the air to be displaced upon hard landings as trapped air will mess up your handling of your tyres. The sponge/foam insert job is primarily to support the tyres internally, so that the tyre does not loose shape and thus loose traction. For me, tyres and wheels are an expendable commodity especially when racing and running in off road conditions. You can use some sets of buggy tyres that have several seasons on them and just bash and play for fun. Switch back to the balanced and new tyres when it comes to racing Hope this helps |
I use a 1/8 dremel cutting bit and pinch the tire and pull it up off the foam. Then just punch a hole in it with the dremel tool being careful not to hit the foam. I would not put holes on the wheel as your tire will go out of balance real fast. Just my 2 cents

You always want holes in the tire and NOT in the rim IMO. Running with holes in the rim and no holes in the tires will allow any dirt or water that enters to stay in the tires. Dirt and dust will build up over time and create issues, and water will ruin the foams if it is trapped for too long.
The easiest way to vent your tires is to use an adjustable leather punch to punch two small holes 180 degrees apart. You do this before mounting the tires. I use one size larger hole for truggy tires vs. buggy tires. I use the second smallest one for buggy and the third for truggy.;) This is the punch I use. http://www.lowes.com/pd_186508-56005...CatalogDisplay |

LOL! - everyone used to argue with us at the magazine when we said to put the hole in the tires instead of the wheels for all the reasons mentioned. They all told us we didn't know what we were talking about...:eek::weird:;)
It's good to see that there aren't too many people left that still put holes in their wheels. :tire::tire::tire::tire: |
Unfortunately, the tires came mounted so I can't use the leather punch. I'll try to see if I can pinch the tires enough to pull them away from the foams to make a hole.
Can I just poke it with a pointy object (I have some automotive picks)? Or will that create a tear that will allow the tire to rip over time and use? |
I just got a set of Jconcepts pre mounts and they even punch holes in the tire and not the rim. And the leather punch works awesome.

If I put holes in my tyres, I wouldn't have any tyres left because they would have shredded from the abuse I give them.
I have no intention to damage structural integrity of my tyres thanks. |

Same one I used also, very easy and fast to work. Got it from Sears @10.00 |
or you can use a heated object (hot nail, solderind iron) but still pull the tire away from the foam so you dont damage them.

I've got one of these, makes perfect holes even on premounted tyres.

http://www.m-k-racing.com/product_in...4&%3CosCsid%3E that tool would appear to punch the foam as well which is never a good idea. |
