A buddy of mine has STS engines and have had the same problems. Trying to get them to run right with the stock carb is a bear. I had an old Ninja MR-BO1 carb and we put in on there and it ran great. I can honestly say that there is no good place to start. When all was said and done...we leaned it waaaay out on top. The bottom was leaned quite a bit too, but nothing as drastic as the top. The motor ran great after that, but it was a pain to get there. After a little experience with it, run the Ninja settings to start. It is going to run really fat to begin with, so expect it. Just lean the needles before you start messing with the idle. Good luck.
