It is a matter of feeling, I believe.

But some people use a piece of paper between the spur and the clutchbell. Then they push the motor & clutch-bell as far in as they can, and then remove the paper. But I haven't used these, so I don't know if it works.

Fold the paper so its a sheet thicker.

But most of the time i just feel for it...Not too much play but not a whole heap either...A happy medium is what i call it!

Yes paper method does work, i personally have never used it, If you are bout to install engine, bolt ur engine mount to ur motor, sit mount with mota attached over holes in chassis, put 2 screws in mount, not opposite, but diagonally, dont tighten too much, just firm so you can slide motor mount. once clutch bell is touching spur gear, hold spur gear with a finger and move
clutch bell, should only rock back and forward(approx 1-2mm), but keep in mind, that once you tighten up the screws, it may decrease the movement
between the gears, if it tightens, just loosen screws slightly and move mota a fraction, then re-tighten, if ur gear mesh is too tight, you will hear it when ya move truggy back & forward, also dont forget to use loctite on screws under chassis(bottom) And if you have to remove ur mota in future, take out the screws that hold mota to engine mount..hope this helps ya..good luck..
