Unfortunately the EVO 3 comes with a Picco style exhaust coupler, it works great for Picco headers, but not so well for standard headers..... Here is the coupler your going to need to use

I bought this same engine & use the JP-3 pipe with it. When I first put the header on I thought the same as you...seemed kinda loose & gonna cause an issue. I put the same seal on the motor that is also in between the manifold & pipe (there are thicker & thinner ones). When I did this i also used a high quality water proof grease (Silkolene) on the seal. What I can say is I have run this combo all season without so much as a hicup from the motor or pipe. It will sit there and idle all day & at any point I pull the throttle it just plain goes!

Back when I ran picco's that's the only one to use. Make sure when you install it to cut it to size. Usually 2-3 mm narrower will be fine. The seal should be flush with the exhaust flange.
