Getting the seals off is easy. Getting them back on properly... Not so much, especially that non-removeable shield on the 3rd bearing which you could see was now warped after he took the awl to it.

Seriously though really good point.. Why take apart a dollar bearing?? The time spent is worth more then a dollar..

Maybe if your crazy and run $5 ceramics on your entire car which is way to extreme IMO.

I personally toss my $1 Avids, and even my $2 TKO Ceramics when they finally blow.

The only bearings I would ever open up and regrease where my BMX bearings and my ABEC-7's I used to run for inline speed skating.

Hi Token.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I've never taken $1 bearings apart. To me, that's the whole point of the dollar bearing: use and discard when it starts to get notchy/rough.

The guide is still useful though; particularly for pricier bearings or ceramic jobs that require maintenance to get your money's worth out of.

There are applications in industry were a bearing shield may need removal .

As for putting a rubber seal on its simple , just put your finger on it and push and turn the bearing at same time it roles right in.

Wanted to add a little info,
The last bearing I removed the shield from is a non-removable shield
so it is not meant to go back on. This is for removing the shield
before putting it into the engine so the fuel can flow thru it. The
life of any bearing, even $1 bearings, can be extended by removing the
shields or seals, soaking in mineral spirits or break cleaner and
blowing dry with compressed air and regrease. Dave

i race electric carpet oval during the winter and we remove all the shields from our bearings, it reduces friction(balls run against the shields a little) and we always clean the factory grease out of them and use really light weight bearing oil. For carpet oval, every little bit helps, i've gained upwards to 2 laps just by cleaning and relubing my bearings
