Basically, when you lick your finger wipe it on the head, it should evaporate between 3-5 seconds. If it takes longer than 5, then you may be rich, and if it boils off under 3 second, then you're possibly running lean. Try to tune to sound, performance, and smoke, don't tune to temp, and at the same time, use common sense and don't run it at an unsafe temp( +300˚F ) for prolonged time..and to save argument, I know people have ran them hotter than 300˚, me included, but in reality, it's not recommended by anyone.

Just use temp as another tuning tool, and not as you're only guide. Any time I have used a temp gun in the past, I had tuning issues. I never use mine anymore, and rarely have tuning issues.
