FYI almost all cheap "temp" guns are set up to read NiMh batt packs, and must be set up acording to the color of the anodizing and the alloy of aluminum.
If your temp gun was under $100 I wouldnt trust it, but then again I havnt used any temp gun in years.

ice water, 32deg F or close obviously. How we test freeze stats on air handling units. have to be close b/c of the FSs are not set right and the coils burst b/c of freezing. then all/part of a buildings heating (heat comes 1st) and/or cooling could be destroyed and in many cases 10s of thousands to fix. so a lil styro cup of ice water time and again has no equal in terms of giving a mechanic a fixed temperature from which to reference.

But thats not the problem with cheap temp guns. They may read 32 degrees fine but high temp I've seen as high temps over 200 be 50 degrees off or more. I've been bit by that before driver said engine fan wasn't coming on temp gun vs ECM was seeing. Changed coolant temp sensor for nothing beside the hot engine. Fan was working driver wasn't uses to the high engine temps.
Cheap temp gun went into the trash bought a good one from Matco tools.
