Anybody ever thought of this?

Anybody ever thought of this?
I was just sitting here and i thought on a nitro engine couldnt you file a flat spot on the shaft of the engine and put a pinion gear on it just as you would do with a electric rc, also you wouldnt have to worry about clutches either.
has this ever been done?
has this ever been done?

um, theres a big problem with thats you woulldn't be able to coast or stop the car to a standstill, without stalling

with a "set screw", the clutch would only have one small point holding it on. with the "collet" there is a full 360 degree clamp around the shaft. the collet will hold much better. Plus you have to run a clutch with a engine.

yes i just thought of the problem.
Is it cause the whole shaft is connected with the piston/rod?

That's not what he was talking about. True though.

Ok sorry nevermind that was a dumb question, i wasnt thinking of everything.

Copy and pasted from the electric offroad section.
I have thought of one thing, a tri tip instead of a hex tip. No more stripped screws! So the hex will be like a triangle. But, knowing how I think the next big thing will be an octo-tip.

What about a central set screw of somesort which adjusts camber angle?

ya chris like i said in my electric thread i think the oct will strip way easier than a hex

Haha yeah I'd love to see you get the engine to idle with this idea

you could do it, but for what or why reasons... it would be like a midget/sprint car..but you could invent a mini in/out box as needed in a full scale car... be kind of interesting getting an engine started, than burp the throttle to get it out of gear to idle...haha
