Default Bearing Cleaning

Anyone have a "best practice" for flushing those bearings????

I'm using the RPM Bearing blaster and too much motor cleaner, looking for a beter cheaper way. I even tried non-chlorinated brake cleaner and that stuff is tough on rubber shielded bearings.

Thanks

i know many of you will disagree, but i've been running the opened bearings with tap water while spinning it 'till it's smooth. Blast with WD-40 afterwards and re-lube.

No problems so far...

If you blast your bearings without taking the shields off, its kinda like trying to pee without opening your fly

I've actually come to the conclusion that now that bearings are a dime a dozen, I don't loose my time anymore cleaning them and wasting precious (and costly) motor spray (let's not even talk about breathing the fumes)... I just chuck them and put new ones on, unless I don't have them in my pit box....

Yup... sounds like my method.

Step 1: Remove bearing.
Step 2: Throw in trash
Step 3: Install new bearing

At $1 each you aren't saving much... and how much is your time worth?

A trick I learned while pan car racing that works great for off-road cleaning and lubing bearings is to use trumpet valve oil. You can get it at any music store for around $5. I also use the Integy bearing bath thing that vibrates with the oil and it will clean anything out of the bearing and lube it at the same time so after 5 minutes in the bath they are ready to go back in the car. It even works on shielded bearings without having to remove the shields!
