losi 2.0 shock mod ?
I have heard of guys doing a vent hole and using a piece of foam above the bladder. Is there an article or someone who has done this that can give me a couple of answers like drill size and vent location foam density and what not. thanks in advance
|
there was an artical inone of the recent mags but not sure which one. they said to use a #56 drill bit and to glue 2 shock orings together and put then between the bladder and cap. i was thinkin of doin this but just haven't gotten a chance.
|
Does anyone know which mag and what month? Thanks
|
zzman..
I think I got it posted on the speed shop thread.. Let me go check.. |

The shocks build up easier and more consistent rebound since all you have to do is fill to the rim, drop on the bladder and tighten down the cap slowly and let the excess oil flow away no pushing up on the shock shaft. On the track I can say that the truck will not bottom on anything, the suspension seems to react quicker to bumps and turns and I never have oil build up at the top of my shocks like I used to. I cut out small stop sign shapes of proline buggy tire inserts for the cussions, I didnt like the 2 o ring idea and every thing is staying clean and holding up well. No rebuilds for 3 races with 3 qual. and 15min main plus 30min of practice each time.

just found the details on the speed shop thread on this forums(offroad). I tried to copy and paste but not sure whats up..lol
It's on the last page. |
I thought I had posted it here but I could not find it. What I do, and this was shown to me by Adam Drake is the following: Drill a small hole in the shock cap(on top) around the flat machined spot. This hole can be approx the same size as the hole on the side of the cap. Take two shock o-rings and glue them together with ca glue. Glue the o-rings into the inside of the cap(center it) Fill your shocks up until about 1/16-1/8 inch from the top. Insert your bladder and make sure it is seated. Pressing lightly with your finger. Once air bubbles escape install cap and you should have close to full rebound front and rear. What you do not want is for the shock to lock up before fully compressing, if so take a touch of oil out and repeat. The more traction the less rebound you will run. The less traction, the more rebound. I think Adam recenly posted this as well. For the most part I always run 3/4- full rebound on all but the highest bite tracks. |
just to clarify:
when you glue the orings in side the cap do they need to be around the drilled hole ? and does the hole need to be drilled in centre of the cap as wouldnt that be hard to do or can it be off centre? pics would be great:nod: Thanks. |
Just don't block the hole with the o-rings, they need to be in the center as they support the bladder.
At the top of your shock cap you will see that milled area that allows you to get the nut driver on easily it starts out small and goes wider. Just drill the small hole half way up that. I'll try to take some pics Friday morning for ya! |
looking forward to it. Thanks for all the help you guys.
|
So you don't have to be worried aboutr the dirt to build up in the shock bladder ? Also what would that 56 hole be in metric ? 1.3mm or 1.4mm or what ?

is anyone trying this with plastic caps? I don't want to mod $30 caps if I don't like it.
|
does anybody have pictures of this mod yet? I just recieved my new 2.0 roller today and i think it already has it done. it's a very small hole on the outer edge of the shock cap?

I can also build them for anyone who may not feel easy about doing it. It's $10 per set on new shocks(includes orings and oil if needed). Shocks come back ready to go. On used Shocks it's $10 plus parts(includes 8 o-rings for the mod). In some cases new bladders are needed. Post in the Speed shop thread or email me @ [email protected] |
I assume this works on the 1.0 shocks as well,,if not can somebody explain why??
Thanks |
Need some pics guys. I tried but it doesnt seem to work to well.
cheers Scott |

What happened to the pics everyone was going to post:confused:

I took some pics ,but they were blurry.
heres ther skinny. well at least what I did. I used a .065 drill or 1/16" drilled a hole in the top of the shock cap.Make sure you drill on the inside of the circle(look inside shock cap to see.)I got pieces of on road tire foam from a Losi team driver who cuts them onto 4 little discs to support the bladder. I wil try again tonight when I maybe get to work on my truggy.Too many paintjobs to do to play r/c mechanic. I will tell you though the mod is awesome and makes the ride ht very consistnt when the chassis and the shocks and all get heat soaked or warm I guess I have not started taking shock temps so... I did try a softer foam before the on road tire, and it did work, but you do need to support the bladder so you may want to mess around with different densities even perhaps. I went what was proven to work and/or help in the end. I am curious bout shock temps now hmmmmmmm nevermind |
I have also done this shock cap mod to my shocks with great results but with the o rings and not the tire foams. I've read that alot of guys are useing tire foams of different densities too and wondered if there would be any benifits to this. I guess I could do up one set with foams and keep the set with the o rings and see if there is any difference.

pics would be great
i'm not to confident drilling holes in new shocks when i haven't seen what to do first has anyone tried this mod on the 8T 2.0 Shocks. the rears are a fair bit longer so im curious if it would still work |
Like someone said earlier this was posted in one of the magazines but I can't remember which one. Basically just a tiny hole straight down beside the mounting hole. If you look at the inside of the shock cap there is a machined ring inside there. This hole will end up on the inside of the ring (near the center.) Then two of the shock seal o-rings glued together and then glued to the center of the shock cap on the inside, just be sure the new hole is not covered by the o-rings when they are glued to the shock cap.
If I knew which mag it was i'd scan the quick little article and post the picture. |
Ok I found the article. The new hole isn't quite near the center of the center ring like I thought. It's still inside the machined ring inside the shock cap but the hole is towards the outer edge of the ring. They say to use a #56 drill bit.
RC-Car Magazine June 2009 Volume 12 No. 6 back on page 96 and 97. If no one has posted pics by the time I get home from work tonight I'll scan this article and post it up. |

i havent done the mod but i heard from drake and thrue that its a lot more to maintain, there words not mine
i just very curious about this mod:batman::batman: |
you get a build up of mud under the shock cap which can pop your bladder
so you need to pull the top off and clean it out all the time for the average racer that only changes his shock oils every other time it just creates more work |
People that use this mod, how they rebuild their shocks? Following the user manual?
Here in Italy we used foam, but every time bladders were broken... Thanks neorf |
