clutch bell rings alot
 

is this normal? i realize they call it a "bell" but my first car so i don't know. Also i think my gear mesh is to tight with the bell/diff. It still turns smoothly but it makes a small humming sound when i am running the car (under the noise of the engine, pretty faint sound kind of a hum) is this normal also? It's close can't quite get a piece of newspaper in it. Now i went to adjust it and one of the engine mount screws striped out. And i am afraid to hit a star wrench in it cause i don't want to bent the chasis.

NO-the "ringing sound" is not normal..most likely you have a bad clutch shoe spring..or..the idle is set to high and the clutch is opening enough to touch the bell...could be the bearings are bad..i usually replace bell bearings every 10-12 tanks

Depending on the car...i usually set the gear mesh by placing a empty plastic parts baggy between the bell and spur and smashing it together then tightening it down..you want some back lash..also check the lash 360 degress to check for high/low spots in the gear

striped engine mount screw..take a dremel tool with a cutting disc and cut a slot in the screw..and use a #2 flat head driver to back it out...beating a "torx" bit into your striped screw usually just makes a bigger stripped screw..you can try it,...it wont bend the chasis unless its made out of card board

it's gotta be the springs. the car is new but when i went to take the clutch of my old engine the springs lost most of their "spring" i will replace the springs and that should do it. THe bearings and clutch shoes should be fine.

Make sure it is shimmed correctly also. If it's not it will ring (wobble) when idle.

wile your in there take a minute to clean up the shoes and clean off any burs on the shoes from being used

Also check to be sure that the back of the clutch bell isn't tapping the flywheel. Look at the flywheel, and if there's a little ring on it about the width of the clutch bell then it probably is. Just put a shim behind the rear clutchbell bearing it it is.
