larger spur gear should give it more torque not a smaller one.

To help with the dirt problem, you could make some dirt/splash guards like the SC2 has.

i don't have a slayer but i had the same problem with my 3.3 REVO easy fix: swap to the PE spring mount header no more problem's

i prolly could have bought a jp-4 and a gallon of fuel with all the coin i dumped on stock header's!
