Shortening Servo leads?
 

Do you guys think it is Ok to shorten the wires from the servo to the RX? I was wondering if it would have any ill effects, since my throttle servo is right next to my box, and has like a 10 inch wire, if I could cut and solder and get rid of 6 inches of wire this would give me lots more room in my batt box...

Whats the verdict?

If you feel comfortable re-working your connector to RX it isn't bad. I've done it a few times just to try it. If you mess up the connector you can buy more and they're not expensive. They basically just snap in place. If you are super careful you can work the metal tabs out of the plastic connector, cut the wire to length, then re-attach the tabs. It's easier to buy new connectors, then cut the wire and attach the new connectors.

The other way is to de-solder the leads to the servo circuit board. I wouldn't recommend this way cause you really have to be "The Man" when it comes to soldering so you don't screw up the circuit board.

I shorten leads pretty often.I use a product from Custom Electronics that looks just like the factory terminals & connectors & their crimpers made specificly for their product.I dont think they have a web site but most any hobby shop that is heavy into planes & helis will know of them,I got mine at a hobby town.CE addy is 934 east houston ave Gilbert AZ 85234 (888)584-6285.When your done it looks factory but limits where you can use the servo.

You mean there is a set of crimpers for those connectors? Gaaahhh! I feel so robbed. How have I missed those for the last two years?

What I want to do is just cut out 6 inches and then splice the wires back together with a dab of solder and some heat shrink tubing...Will the splice draw the same current? Is it ok to do it this way?

If you can solider well, then go for it. I've done it in the past without any problems.

X2....make the solder Joint as Small as possible and DO NOT let the solder wick into the wire...it can and WILL break if you let too much solder in...also make sure you have small enough shrink...test a piece on a junk servo wire or a switch wire or something to make sure it will actually seal up the connection. :nod:

The jaws on those crimpers in the link look like the ones I have,they have a step in them so they crimp the wire clamp & insulator clamp to different sizes good stuff.

You could go either way. Cut and splice will not have enough loss to effect anything. I also build scale planes and have to wire out to 95" wingspans and the system they recommended works great and is alot cleaner than splicing.
