well as the title says...
ive been working on my buddies savage xl and his owb is slipping after about a tank or 2.
he has the roto start on it and the only way i can get it to start grabbing again is by dismantling the motor and taking the owb out (has the internal owb in the crankcase).

i have been hitting it with denatured alcohol (thought it was gummed up due to his neglect of after run care)
and then soked it up good with wd40 and hit it with the air can to get the majority of it out and it would work.
for about a tank or 2.

then same problem again...

am i overlooking the starter shaft??
it looks good, i checked it with my calipers and its consistent all the way down.

is the owb shot??
i hate this design with the owb inside the crankcase. its nuthin but problems for my buddy. hes always bringing it ouver for me to tear apart. ive never touched any hpi rc ( i hate thier stuff) and this reason is just verifying my feelings day after day..
please help, it feels like im missing something but i just cant get it to keep grabbing

Should of got a new OWB after the first time you tried to fix it.

just the nature of the beast IMO

the roto start is over-powering the bearing, like when the motor is flooded it tries to turn the engine over anyway and wears it out

if it was up to me i would have.. but hes kind of ...umm... cheap, lol
hed rather have me try to fix something 4-5 times and have some hope of ti working than just buy it outright... i dunno. if i have a problem with something i buy a new one and play with the "broke" one on the side just in case it would work i would have a backup to jump to if needed...

but again its not my vehicle not my call.

yup its worn, and once it is and you keep trying to start it, it will only wear the shaft down

Yeah man one bearings take allot of abuse in the first place from the compression of the motor let alone when they flood and a new guy keeps trying to spin it over. I had one go just for the hell of it.

Tell him to buy it or no more savage. He'll give in.

i hate overthinking things but when you stare at something for 5 hrs a day it starts to take its toll on you.hahah

hahaha yeah but hes my buddy and i know how tight money is for him right now. (as with just about everyone) so i try to keep my wrenches moving to a minimum to keep my cost down
