Sounds like you have a gear mesh issue, keeping your gears meshed properly will stop most issues. Also is your motor mount moving?

gear mesh is easy .
loosen the motor mount so motor can be moved easily
take a piece of standard paper. cut a 10mm wide 100mm (1/2"x4") long strip. fold in half so its bit thicker or just get bit thicker paper

put it between spur and clutch bell push the motor onto the spur and tighten the motor mount . now just pull the paper out and it should go out with bit of a force but not rip . now u got a perfect mesh.

i never stripped a single gear on any of my cars.

thick paper works on mod 1.0 gears in 1:8 scale thinner on 32p and smaller teeth (48p, 64p)
